TTs - Coolant Drain / Flush (VR6)

"Wait, I have to drain out the coolant?"

The cooling system for the VR6 is very important in keeping the temperature of your engine right around the 195 degree F mark.  Check it often and watching the level of the coolant is very important.  But after time and heating and re-heating of the coolant, it begins to lose it's properties and can turn acidic.  Acidic coolant will eat through hoses and gaskets at an accelerated rate which can lead to failing hoses and water pumps.

1.)  Begin by having the car OFF and somewhat cool; you will be dealing with hot coolant if the car has been driven some time before.

2.)  Locate the coolant drain plug on the coolant pipe of the VR6.  It's left and quite above the oil filter housing; it's a quarter sized plug with a flathead screwdriver fitting in it.

3.)  Unscrew and let the coolant drain out into a collection vat; expect to get about a little less of two gallons out of the system.

4.)  Once drained, re-install plug.  * Note: Do NOT overtighten the coolant drain plug since the coolant pipe and plug are plastic.  If overbearing stress is applied, the coolant pipe or plug could crack and leak. *

5.)  To get the residual coolant out of the radiator, remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator.  Reconnect once all the coolant is drained out.

6.)  Premix new coolant (VW G11 or G12 - phosporous free [depending on year application] ) with distilled water in a 50% - 50% or 60% - 40% (for colder climates) ratio.

7.)  Remve the expansion tank pressure cap and add mixed coolant to expansion tank; fill to MAX line.

8.)  Start car and turn on the heater.  Fill the expansion tank if the coolant falls below the MIN line.  Re-install expansion tank pressure cap.

9.)  Drive normally for a few days and periodically check level of coolant in expansion tank.  Add premixed coolant accordingly.

Once underneath the vehicle, you should be able to spot the coolant drain plug (circled in yellow).  When looking directly up, you'll spot it above the oil filter housing on the passenger side of the coolant drain pipe.  When removing the plug, remember to watch for it when it falls; highly recommend using a collection tub to have it fall into along with the coolant.  Losing the plug will create serious head-aches since the car will not be able to hold coolant if not re-installed.
