TTs - OBDI Trouble Codes

"Never thought I'd ever depend on a four-digit code..."

The following is the full list of Volkswagen Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from Bently Publications for the On-Board Diagonstic (OBDI) system.  These are posted to help you, the MK3 owner, to isolate your specific problem and help further you in correcting it.  For more details and explaination on the assignment of DTCs, feel free to read up on Bentley's website concerning general tech of Volkswagen DTCs.

DTC

Probable Fault

Corrective Action

1111

Mono-Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - ECM faulty (electronic component failure in ECM)

If no other fualts can be found, the ECM is probably faulty and should be replaced.

1231

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - missing or incorrect signal, VSS wiring damaged / opened / shorted, VSS faulty, speedometer faulty.

Check output signal the from speedometer VSS.  Check sensor wiring.  Check speedometer operation.

1232

Throttle Position Actuator (TPA) - missing or incorrect signal, TPA wiring damaged / opend / shorted, TPA faulty.

Check wiring and resistance if the TPA.  Check that the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is operating properly.

2113

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor - missing or incorrect signal, CMP wiring damaged / opend / shorted, CMP (Hall) sensor faulty.

Check wiring and signal from the CMP (Hall) sensor.  Check that the distributor is correctly installed.  Test the signal from the Hall sensor.  Check ignition timing.

2121

Closed Throttle Position (CTP) switch - missing or incorrect signal, CTP wiring damaged / opened / shorted, CTP faulty.

Check the wiring and signal from teh CTP switch; check the switch opens / closes electronically.  Checl that the accelerator pedal cable is correctly adjusted.  Check that the TPA is functioning correct and that the throttle level is contacting the throttle stop.

2212

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) - missing or incorrect signal, TPS wiring damaged / opened / shorted, TPS faulty.

Check wiring and signal from the TPS.

2312

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) - missing or incorrect signal, CTS wiring damaged / opened / shortd, CTS faulty.

Check wiring and signal from the CTS.  Check for corrosion at hte connector, causing intermittent malfunctions.

2322

Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor - missing or incorrect signal, IAT wiring damaged / opened / shortd, IAT faulty.

Check wiring and signal from the IAT.

2341

Oxygen Sensor (O2S) control - incorrect oxygen sensor signal to ECM (fuel mixture too lean or too rich).  Sensor heater circuit may be open or faulty.

Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit and sensor output signal first.  Lean: check exhaust system for leaks between catalytic convertor and exhaust manifold, check for intake air leaks (unmeasured air), check fuel pressure (too low).  Rich: check ignition system for misfire, check fuel pressure (too high), check for leaking or stuck open fuel injector, check the Evaporative (EVAP) emission system (purge regulator valve stuck open).

2342

Heated Oxygen Sensor - no oxygen sensor signal to ECM.  Sensor heater control circuit may be open or faulty.

Check oxygen sensor output signal (voltage fluctuating between 0.0 - 1.0 volts).  Check oxygen sensor heater circuit.

2413

Mixture Control Adjustment - fuel mixture too lean or too rich.

Check for conditions causing a lean or rich running conditions (see DTC 2341).  Check fuel pressure, ignition system, and exhaust system.

4444

No DTC recognized / found

No corrective action necessary.
