TTs - MK4 Shift Knob / Boot

"Able to get a grip on the situtation..."

After countless shifts on your stock shift knob and boot, it's probably pretty worn out and faded, correct?  You probably don't want to search for another OEM or hidious aftermarket shift knob, but dreamed about having a MK4 shifter?

Do you know that's it is possible?  Indeed, thanks to Volkswagen's interchangability between the MK3 and MK4, installing a new boot and knob is very easy.  There are a ton of styles to choose from to customize your shifter to your tastes.

1.)  To begin removing the existing shift knob / boot, gently lift of the shift boot from the center console.

2.)  Next, unscrew the shift knob counter clock-wise and remove from the shifter assembly.

3.) While shifter assembly is off, it's recommended to have a look at the shift linkage and double check shifter play and remove dirt or grime that's been collected over time.

4.)  Take the new knob and using generous pressure on the top of it, screw clock-wise to have the knob catch the threads of the shifter assembly.  Since the MK4 shift knobs are plastic and non-threaded, using top pressue the shift assembly will self-tap the shift knob and it will begin to self-thread.

** Make sure that the car is off while installing the new knob.  Moving the shifter into gear while the car is running could create forward or reverse movement and / or damage to the drivetrain. **

Continue to screw on the shift knob untill it is tight enough where the shift knob will not turn unless excessive force is used.  Also, be conscientious when tightening down the knob so that you can be able to center out the gear selector if desired.

5.)  Once the knob has been screwed down, re-install new boot unto the center console.
